He is Assistant Professor of Italian and Mediterranean Studies at the Columbia University of New York. He is former Fellow of the Institute of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (CCHS-CSIC, Madrid, 2012-2013), the Fondazione Cini/Centro Vittore Branca (Venice, 2011-2012), and the Villa I Tatti (Harvard, Florence, 2010-2011).

He received his Laura in Lettere from the Università di Pisa in 2002 and his Diploma di perfezionamento (Ph.D.) in Linguistics and Modern Philology from the Scuola Normale Superiore in 2009.

Tommasino’s research focuses on the linguistic, textual, bibliographical and religious relations between Southern Europe and the Muslim World, especially on the Italian and Latin translations of the Qur’ān and on the diffusion of Italian language and books in Northern Africa and the Middle East (16th/17th century).

Book:

His first book L’Alcorano di Macometto. Storia di un libro del Cinquecento europeo, published by il Mulino in 2013, was co-funded by the Lila Acheson Wallace - Reader’s Digest Publication Grant at Villa I Tatti (Harvard) and by the Research project of the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research, Oltre la Guerra Santa “Beyond the Holy War, Christian-Muslim Relations between 15th and 19th century”, led by Dr Giuseppe Marcocci (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa).
